VIXX’s first subgroup LR debuts with a hauntingly mesmerizing EP album called “Beautiful Liar.” Released on Aug. 16, the album has support from Starlights, a name given to fans, and won 1st place on a popular Korean music show.

The subgroup is made up of two members, Ravi, the rapper of VIXX, and Leo, the main vocalist. All six tracks on the album were composed and written by the two members, showcasing their amazing musical abilities. What is unique about every song is the connection to inner conflict and the emotions that are conjured up as a result.

The title track, “Beautiful Liar,” tells of a man who is on the verge of losing the girl he loves but is indecisive on whether to reach out to her. The music video takes on a beautiful and metaphorical perspective, displaying Leo, who represents the “lie,” and Ravi, the “truth,” at constant battle with each other, signifying man’s contradictory attitudes. Only one source of light shines on Leo and Ravi throughout the video, reminding viewers that they represent the same person.

The album also features two solo songs, “Ghost” performed by Ravi and “Words to Say,” sung by Leo. With the intense beats in “Ghost” and the gentle piano sounds in “Words to Say,” along with meaningful lyrics, listeners can see into the members’ hearts and their passion for music.

The fifth track called “My Light” is performed by the entire group of VIXX, despite being featured on a sub-unit album. In the song, VIXX sings about their love for their fans and how appreciative they are for all the support they have received. It also represents how the group has grown over the past few years since their official debut in 2012.

“Beautiful Liar” is a beautiful album that captures human emotion and conflict in every song. The tracks accurately portray the rawest of feelings in such a way that speaks to all who have been in similar situations. Listeners will cry, laugh and sing along, all while learning to embrace even the lowest downfalls in the human condition.

“Beautiful Liar” is available for purchase on iTunes and is streaming on Youtube  and Korean search engine Naver.
