Seniors Alexandrea Somera and Larene Ujimori will be performing in the “2014 World of Dance Tour,” a worldwide dance competition with dance companies competing or exhibiting their dancing techniques.

Somera, who has danced since childhood, appeared in many Academy ballet productions over the past four years. For this competition, Somera will perform with her dance company, “Boogie Down Productions (BDP).”

“I’ve been performing with BDP for over two years now and I love it,” Somera said. “For the competition, I will be dancing with two teams, BDP Senior and the Adult Company.”

Ujimori, a former member of the dance crews, “Blank Canvas” and “Academy of Hype,” will perform a solo exhibition.

“I will be dancing a routine choreographed by my mentor, Brandon Ron, from Blank Canvas,” Ujimori said. “I have done solo performances in the past, so this is just like another performance to me.”

Somera and Ujimori turn to dance during hard times and have found a part of themselves by engaging in the art form.

Somera said, “Dance is not just a sport or something to kill time. It is my passion and pillar of support.  It has given me the confidence that I’ve never really had.”

The “World of Dance” event will be held on Dec. 14 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. It begins at 3p.m. and and features performances from Poreotics, the Les Twins, Ricky Cole and more.
