High school students sometimes resist the idea of school in the summer because of the impression that classes ruin summer’s fun and freedom, but the thought is misleading.

Students can still enjoy the summer break while participating in programs which continue their learning. Students are able to determine if a career choice is serious and can explore their interests more thoroughly through summer programs.

Teens can engage in specialized programs for a career field through customized experiences, such as Northwestern University’s National High School Institute for aspiring student journalists. The courses delve into writing, reporting and investigating on a level that surpasses the exposure of most high school journalism programs.

Academic programs can include fun activities unlike traditional school schedules with a rigid bell schedule. These programs provide pleasing agendas that stray from traditional, fixed schedules and provide an enticing form of learning that motivates and encourages students.

Summer programs also offer networking opportunities. Students can make friends outside their usual school groups. It’s a great way for participants to escape typical high school drama and form connections beyond the school’s walls and population. Exposure to a wider variety of individuals and classes enriches students.

Too often teens believe that school during the summer is boring and difficult, but summer programs offer enjoyable experiences with new people, new surroundings and new experiences. Students get to explore a subject they’re interested in that is not necessarily offered in their school but held in a more enticing setting.

Summer programs offer a variety of opportunities ranging from new friends to new learning opportunities. Choosing to participate in academic programs over summer break can be an eye-opening and amazing opportunity for students.
