Members of the Lower School Digital Media Club in grades four through six visited the Hawaiian Humane Society on Jan. 31 to learn how to care for and support animals.

Club adviser Laurel Oshiro chaperoned the visit.

Oshiro said, “The after school club has 15-20 members who learn how to make movies to make Hawaii a better place. They also learn from experts in the industry about filmmaking, directing and editing as well as pursuing digital media as a profession.”

The trip to the Humane Society was to teach students about caring for animals in Hawaii, but students also interviewed and filmed volunteers for public service announcements (PSAs) about adopting and caring for pets, donating items for use by animals and volunteer opportunities.

Sixth grader Emma Kauhane said, “My favorite part was talking to a volunteer asking them about their experience helping out because you get a glimpse into how they feel about the animals. It made me want to help even more compared to when I just go there to see the animals.”

Students also donated blankets, bedding, puppy pads, bowls and shampoo.

Fourth grader Rory Redila said, “My favorite part was learning how many animals that they save and get adopted each week, because it showed me how much the Hawaiian Humane Society helps animals.”
