As the end of the quarter quickly approaches, exams become more and more a reality. The stress that often accompanies exams is dreaded by many. There are, however, ways to lessen the anxiety of mid-terms.

Preparing well before the actual testing can provide better grades and lessen stress.

Long-term preparation helps to decrease stress, rather than handling the consequences of procrastinating.

To begin preparations, students should gather as much old information as possible. That means notes, old quizzes and tests, homework and plan sheets — whatever materials were given in class and returned.

To avoid cramming for exams, it is best to study well for tests throughout the semester, but if that’s not possible now, knowing the information to be covered on tests allows one to better understand concepts and worry less. Students should ask teachers what will be covered on tests and if necessary, how to prepare.

Knowing the over-arching concepts is most important. Beginning with main ideas and building up to intricate details will increase one’s understanding.

Determining what questions are most likely to be asked on an impending exam will offer guidance when preparing; ensuring that major points have been covered will heighten one’s chances of success.

Guaranteeing that one cares for her health needs also creates less chaos. Maintaining proper nutrition and exercise can help students alleviate any possible health concerns, eliminating another possible stress factor. Consuming healthy foodstuffs assures that students will maintain their well-being.

Maintaining a regular sleeping schedule helps students perform at their best. Attempting to function with few hours of sleep provides more difficult working conditions. Ensuring that rest is a priority will have effective results. Staying up late to study is not conducive to good results on tests.

Once one is adequately prepared, students need to take time to relax. Attempting to take an hour and a half exam while anxious can be a bewildering experience. Carving a little time out of one’s studying schedule for social or recreational activities can ease the mind and spirit.

Though finals are stressful, they are not the end of the world. Semester exams can be made easier with preparation and care for one’s health.
