Service learning impacts students’ lives

Service learning enhances learning and strengthens community.

Theology teacher Lynn Fonseca said, “Part of the service learning projects is to help and give back to those in need no matter what age, and it is important for students to reach out to those in need.”

Service learning encourages living in the spirit of Jesus who came “to serve and not to be served.” It builds self-esteem, develops a sense of self-respect for others, develops happy, healthy personalities and effects positive changes in society.

Sophomore Tiffany Nakama-Fukuhara said, “I am very glad to have the opportunity to volunteer around my community because I know that even any small help can make a big difference in the long run. I have also become a more caring person because of my service learning projects and am proud to be able to say that I have served my community.”

Students are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours each year, but many do so much more. At the end of the year, certificates are awarded to high school students with more than 150 hours and junior high students with more than 100 hours. Pins are given to high school students with more than 200 hours and junior high students with more than 150 hours.

In the second quarter, students complete an interim progress report.

In the third quarter, students complete e-portfolios, using Naviance Family Connection which counselors, parents and teachers can view.

In the fourth quarter, students do class presentations with students who shared similar experiences.

Nakama-Fukuhara said, “I volunteer at a children’s center every week, which has definitely helped me to become a more responsible, caring and well-rounded person. Because my service is regular, I need to make sure that I am ready and willing to participate in any way possible each time that I am at the center. As a part of my volunteering, I communicate with a lot of young children and have shaped a more caring nature since kids can be very sensitive and see me as a role model. Lastly, because I am not an athletic person, community service is a great way for me to participate in extracurricular activities. Ultimately, service learning helps me to put my best self forward.”
