Isaac Marion’s debut novel “Warm Bodies” has received a boost in popularity thanks to its recent film adaptation starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer and John Malkovich.

The novel is written from the point of view of “R,” a zombie with no memories of his past life. He is unable to speak save a couple of monosyllabic words and grunts.

After killing a boy named Perry, R experiences Perry’s memories and falls in love with Perry’s girlfriend Julie. After saving Julie from other zombies, R takes her back to his home, a 747 parked at the local airport, and tries to pass her off as a zombie. The climax of the book comes when Julie escapes to return to her father and a group of survivors and R follows her.

Although R’s speech is limited, his inner dialogue is witty, poetic and intriguing, making it difficult for readers to begrudge him of his actions as a zombie. As the novel progresses, Marion explores subjects like love, loyalty, friendship and what it means to be human, while keeping readers entertained with R’s narration and Julie’s captivating personality.

Although the novel is a touching and humorous love story, it is also a novel about zombies. This book is recommended for mature readers due to violent content, disturbing themes, and mature language and themes.
