Flexible and adaptable attitudes prove beneficial in work force

Adaptability and flexibility are two important life skills that are significant for peer interactions in school as well as the work place. Being able to cope and quickly adjust to changes are traits that many should acquire.

Adaptability and flexibility are two attributes that are highly prized, especially in business leaders and CEOs. More opportunities are offered to those who can be flexible because employers prefer to work with people who can move and are dynamic. Individuals who realize that plans can change, while having the ability to adapt to the change, are often the most patient, resilient and determined.

Employers seek workers who are stable during times of change, which also means being dependable, trustworthy and capable of maintaining duties while overcoming challenges. Responding well to conflicts or obstacles is also important because it is a good indicator of good attitude and behavior.

Having the ability to perform more than one task is a trait that many employers are looking for. Due to the increasingly competitive job market, many employers tend to select those who can do more than one job because it saves time and money.

Being adaptable allows individuals to transition well in different settings and keep an open mind when it comes to new ideas and experiences. Today’s young people tend to change careers a number of times due to economic changes, unsatisfactory income or other conflicts. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, “those who were born in the later years of the baby boomers held 10.5 jobs from age 18 to 40. In 2006, over 40 percent of Americans left their jobs.”

Job security was a concept that was realistic and common; however, in today’s tough economy there are no longer definite ways in which people can secure a career. In order to maintain a job, workers must constantly be informed about ongoing events, be resilient during difficult times, and have the ability to change and reinvent themselves. Those who are able to be flexible and versatile are considered more valuable employees than those who are not.

Due to new advances and a fast-paced mindset that defines our society, people must develop an attitude that is receptive to change. Being adaptable also presents new opportunities and allows one to gain new experiences. Those who are willing to make mistakes and take risks are individuals who are often the most capable of adapting well in difficult or new situations.

As in-demanded career attributes, being flexible and adaptable can assist one in progressing in a career and also make one appear more confident, congenial and determined. There are many opportunities in which individuals can develop these skills, including studying abroad and balancing a part-time job while obtaining a degree.

According to benefitspro.com, 51 percent of female respondents believe that flexibility and adaptability are the most important skills in the work place, with knowledge of technology at 37 percent and teamwork at 35 percent. For women, these skills are the building blocks to success and a path to achieving career goals.
