The newest Freshman Class has been initiated into the Sacred Hearts family. This year the initiation for the class of 2016 featured as theme, “Back in Time.” The week kicked off with Movie Monday and ended with the initiation performances in the gym on Friday.

Throughout the week Freshmen and Juniors had activities, including wearing matching accessories, sharing ice cream treats and learning different dances from past decades, such as the twist and the hustle.

“They are all coming out of their shells and stepping up,” said Lurline Choy, Freshman Division adviser, about her class. “On Thursday the girls participated in an evolution of dance with their big sisters and even those who don’t seem outgoing were giving it their all and participating. They have been practicing very hard for their performance.

“The girls are very happy. The Juniors have been very generous with their gifts and activities. They are trying very hard to make sure everyone is happy.”

The tradition of initiation is about celebrating and creating relationships within the school and fosters a sense of belonging.

The students of the class of 2014 are also excited to finally be big sisters.

“I’m really happy to be a big sister,” said junior Maria Cashdollar. “I like taking care of my little sister and helping her out. I never had a big sister, so I want to work as hard as I can to make sure my little sister has a good experience.”

The Junior Class also fosters leadership skills by coordinating such an experience.

“It can be stressful at times,” said junior Innika Pang. “I do feel like I’m growing as a person, though. I’m becoming more responsible now that I have to look out for someone else.”

“It’s been a great bonding experience,” said Choy. “The teachers of the two divisions met and had lunch together the other day, and we talked about how everyone had fun and got closer together. It’s been really nice.”
