Keeping busy during summer on low budget

Regardless of how exciting summer vacation seems during the first weeks, sooner or later teens find themselves bored and think there is nothing to do.Yet, there are so many activities that can be done.

Summer vacation is supposed to be exactly what it sounds like: a vacation, a time for fun and relaxation.

Freshman Lourdes Acosta said, “ In previous years I procrastinated and did my summer reading and projects within the last week of my summer vacation and I stressed out about it, but this past summer I finished all of it within the first week and realized that it was a much better way of handling school work. Instead of worrying about it all summer long, I was able to enjoy my vacation.”

Another activity that can be fun and productive is volunteering for something one loves while earning community service hours for school. Some community service organizations that need volunteers are the Hawaiian Humane Society, local libraries and schools including Sacred Hearts Academy. When deciding where to volunteer, teens should find something that they are passionate about to make the experience that much better.

Sophomore Meryl Mindo said, “ During the summer I volunteer at the state library because my favorite thing to do is catch up on some reading. Now I can work for two hours or so a day and then spend time reading my books.”

There are also academic summer courses for low fees sponsored by the state, movies on Waikiki Beach and Japanese bon dances.

The summer is a perfect time to learn a new language or take a course just because it’s interesting. Schools and universities around the state, including Kamehameha, Punahou and UH, offer summer courses to high schoolers.

Movies on the beach offer a good way to spend time with family and friends while enjoying a relaxed summer. Bon dances are great for families of all ethnicities to enjoy the good food and joyful music and to learn the cultural dances.

Parent Jenn Atud said, “I enjoy taking my children, nephews and nieces to these events because it is our way of bonding and spending quality time together without spending outrageous amounts of money.”

Museums, the zoo and aquarium are also inexpensive and fun activities during the summer. The Bishop Museum and Children’s Discovery Center offer all day admission for a low rate that the whole family can do together. They are also educational.
