The second installment of the “Divergent” series, although not quite faithful to the book, is a thrilling adventure which follows the endeavors of Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley) as she tries to stop the evildoings of antagonist Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet).

The movies, based on the trilogy by Veronica Roth, depict a society split into five factions based on the personalities and values of its members: Dauntless, the brave; Amity, the peaceful; Abnegation, the selfless; Candor, the honest; and Erudite, the intelligent. Members who have an aptitude for two or more factions are labeled Divergents. Citizens who are not accepted into any faction are “Factionless” and essentially the homeless of the society.

Jeanine, head of the Erudite faction, believes that Divergents must be eradicated to preserve the society. The Factionless and Dauntless team up in preparation for war against Erudite.

When a box which only a Divergent can open falls into Jeanine’s hands, she blackmails Tris, a special Divergent, into opening the box. Tris undergoes five virtual simulations, each pertaining to one of the five factions, to open the box.

The box contains a video message from a woman who informs citizens that their gated city was a social experiment. They learn they are not the only people left in the world, prior (no pun intended) to previous beliefs. Because the world slowly became corrupt, the city was created to revive the lost sense of ethics humans had once had.

The film ends with a plot twist and leaves viewers anticipating the third installment, which will be split into two films.

Following the current trend, the 119-minute film captures a dystopian society in which people must go to extreme measures to ensure the survival of humanity. Although viewers have complained that the movie is far too different from the book for their liking, Roth counters that there is “too much plot in the book ‘Insurgent’ to cram into a movie, and a movie would have suffered from an exact replica of it.” (hypable.com)

The exciting, action-packed film will have viewers on the edge of their seats. Elaborate computer-generated effects and realistic stunt scenes make the audience feel as though they are right next to the characters. Intricate plots will capture viewers’ attention until the very end.

The film is rated PG-13 and is targeted towards teens and young adults.
