The Sophomore Class’ service project for this year involves working with youth. From Mar. 17 to March 28, sophomores were asked to donate gently used clothing for the Big Brothers Big Sisters clothing drive.
Senior Siman Zhang started this clothes drive for her American Government initiative, which is to create a change in the community for the better.
Zhang said, “This was my third year as a big sister at Ala Wai Elementary and Aliiolani Elementary. However, due to lack of funding, many of the meeting sites with the littles had to be cut and my time with my little sister at Ala Wai was one of those that were cut. I thought that by somehow creating some awareness and help for this program, the community would become aware of the great work the organization does for the youth and their prospective families as well. ”
To encourage students to bring in clothing, prizes, including a pizza party, were offered. In the two weeks, sophomores collected more than 60 bags of items.
Sophomore Shajaira Fiesta said, “It is important for everyone to realize how lucky we all are and to appreciate everything we have. If each student was able to donate even a small bagful of items, we will be putting a smile on the faces of a handful of kids.”
