Fifth graders take a break from school to attend camp

Fifth+graders+take+a+break+from+school+to+attend+camp

Fifth graders have departed for Camp Timberline in Waianae, run by Kamaaina Kids.

Team building activities and individual activities will challenge the girls to take risks. For example, they will walk upon a high wire which is 25-30 feet above the ground.

Fifth grade teacher, Susan Phillips, said, “The purpose is to allow the girls to develop self-esteem and confidence. The team building activities allow the girls to apply critical thinking, to problem solve and to trust their team members. It also teaches the girls to listen to one another and to contribute to a team’s efforts so that the team can be successful and learn to compromise for it’s success. In addition, this camp experience allows the girls to spend time together as one group of fifth graders, instead of two separate homerooms.”

Sixth grader Logan Shiroma who went last year said, “Camp Timberline was really fun! There was a lot of great activities such as the low ropes. We had to walk on a rope tied to two trees and make it across using each other for balance. I made new friends and built stronger relationships. Camp Timberline had campfires where we did skits in groups. We also went on a hike with beautiful trees and scenery.”

I remember when I went to camp Timberline and Camp Erdman! It was a great experience to learn and make new friends. It was fun to bond with the whole class as one. I felt as if we were actually closer to each other after the trip and we built more trust. Overall it was exciting and I definitely wish we could go again.

I think it is a good idea for students to get a break from school and do something fun with their class every once in awhile. It’s a good time to make new friends and have fun doing it. The kids get to get to know one another more and bond with their teachers and friends.

I remember when 7th grade went to Camp Erdman we had so much fun but also learned a lot. We also experienced taking risks and bonded more with the grade. I think that it is amazing that they are learning these things earlier in life. When they get to 7th grade and go to Camp they will learn more then they already know. I thought that the camp helped me work together with the other students in my class and get to know them a little better. Overall it was a fun learning experience and I hope the 5th graders have the same feeling that I had.

I remember when we did this in 5th grade. It was a very fun experience and I enjoyed every minute of it, especially the time when we roasted marshmallows. Its important that we do this because we get to feel what its like to be in the wilderness and we get a good exercise from walking on the mountain.

I think that kids this age going to camp is very fun experience. Especially, when going with classmates. It teaches them to take responsible risks and to know how to work well with other students. I went to camp two years ago and it was a very good learning experience.

Camp Timberline! I remember when I went! That was definetly my favorite class trip, it was a great experience and I conquered so many of my fears! What made it even better was that my friends were there to support me.

I think that going to camp Timberline is a great idea. School can be scary for girls if they don’t have many people they can trust. I remember going to camp, and how it helped me to trust my class, I also had a great time joking and bonding with the grade.

i think that it is true that for you to build self esteem you have to face your fears and do the best you can. and if you fail you fail and if you exceed you succeed! when you at least try you get a little bit of more confidence than before. when i was in fifth grade i remember everything from the wire up in the air and to the stepping stools in the air and the best of all the poles. it was so fun to even try it out at first i was scared but when we were doing the “menehune walk” i think that was what it was called, anyways when we did that everybody kept on falling down and i was loosing confidence but later on people kept on cheering on for me so than i continued on and what do you know i made it and i was the first one there! Yay!

I think this is a great and fun way to develop self-esteem and confidence as Susan Phillips said. By doing things they won’t normally get to do, its a great way to challenge themselves and really put themselves out there.
