The Sacred Hearts Academy community supported the Keiki Run and Great Aloha Run (GAR) on Feb. 16 and 17.

The Keiki Run series is a fundraising opportunity to support health education in public and private schools. It is a flat course that starts and ends at the Great Aloha Run Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

Schools designated by race participants received a donation of the registration fees from Kahoomiki: Hawaii Council on Physical Activity.

PE teacher Elizabeth Loo said, “This year there were 204 participants from the Academy.”

Lower school students who participated in the Keiki Run included fourth grader Emma Premeaux who said, “I like running so I really liked to participate in the run.”

Lower school students also participated in the 5-2-1-0 flash mob.

Fourth grader Naiya Rapahel said, “I really love running, but I loved doing the flash mob dance to the 5-2-1-0 song.”

The GAR has been recognized nationally as one of the “100 Great Road Races” by Runner’s World Magazine. It has raised $9.6 million for over 150 non-profit health and human service organizations and community groups throughout Hawaii.

The GAR is an 8.15-mile run that starts at Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu and ends at Aloha Stadium.

GAR sponsors provided 100 free entries to Academy students, faculty and alumnae. Students, teams and coaches from Physical Education classes, basketball and paddling teams also ran.

The GAR Expo 2013 featured an array of exhibit booths that offered products and services, entertainment and workshops.

The Fitness Expo’s High School Challenge saw 12 students from Sacred Hearts team with St. Louis School to compete against other schools. The Fitness Expo was on Saturday before the actual race.

PE teachers Loo and Erinn Abregar coordinated the events.

Abregar said, “We were able to get 100 alumnae, students, teachers and faculty to participate in the run this year, so we did meet the requirement for the free entries.”

First-time participants enjoyed the activity.

Junior Aimy Ung said, “I ran the run for the first time, and I enjoyed it so much. I loved being able to run with my friends and to achieve something new for the first time.”

This event was a really fun experience! I was one of the people who was passing out t-shirts at the Great Aloha Run. I so excited about meeting my friends at 4:30 in the morning. We were all very cold and tired, but we managed to keep our spirits high and stay positive so we can give the runners good vibes and make them feel good about themselves. When the runners started to come I can still remember that time when the Head of our Leo Club, Jim, said that the first runner was going to arrive in 15 minutes, when the race has just begun. All of a sudden, all the runners started coming in and my friends Melanie, Arisa, Kalei, Jenelle and I started to cheer them on! I think the SHA Leo Club members should be able to do this again next year because it will let you bond more with you classmates, high school friends, and teachers. I know I bonded more with my friends and now we are BFF’s forever!!!

It was great to see people so happy at the end of the race. I had imagined people being grumpy and tired, but I thought wrong. I am glad that I participated in this event with the Leo Club.

I attended this event and I really enjoyed myself. I got to pass out T-shirts with my friends. The thing I didn’t like about this event was that we had to be there early. I really liked watching the finishers be happy when they crossed the finish line.

I think this is a very good program because it helps people get moving and helps other people who need money as well.

This was a very informative article. I participated in the GAR, and unfortunately got hurt along the route, but enjoyed watching the activities at the stadium. I’m glad that so many students for our school participated.

This article was very informative to me, especially because I participated in the GAR as well. I previously didn’t know that the run was able to raise a massive amount of money for various organizations. Great job!

I personally did not know that there were 204 participants from Sacred Hearts at the GAR. I was there as a volunteer for the Leo Club passing out shirts. Next year I may want to run/walk the GAR.

The 5210 Keiki Run was a fantastic event! The girls looked great in their 5210 shirts, and we all enjoyed being part of the warm-up activities by doing the 5210 flash mob dance. I really enjoyed running with the girls and their families, and hope next year the turn-out is even bigger!
