Science Symposium offers workshops for girls in grades 5-8

Science+Symposium+offers+workshops+for+girls+in+grades+5-8

The 19th Annual Sacred Hearts Academy Science Symposium is for girls in grades 5 to 8 from schools all over the island.

Students hear about careers and opportunities in science and participate in hands-on workshops.

Special Events Director, Toni Normand, said, “It’s important for young women to focus their studies on the areas of science, technology, engineering and math because that is where some of the most exciting opportunities for future jobs will be! We hold the Science Symposium annually because sometimes girls do not have as many opportunities to be exposed to science.

“Some of the workshops that will be offered include developing surgical skills, wildlife biology, uncovering and viewing DNA and learning to survey the forest to preserve endangered species,” she said.

While the students are in workshops, parents can attend a “For Parents’ Only” session which will give them ideas to help their daughters advance in science, technology, engineering and mathematical fields.

Dr. Julie T. Anné will be speaking at the parent session. Anné is a licensed clinical psychologist and eating disorder expert. She is the founder and clinical director of A New Beginning, LLC, an innovative outpatient treatment center dedicated to the comprehensive care of eating disorders, depression, anxiety and trauma.

A registration form can be found on the Sacred Hearts Academy school web site and submitted online, emailed or mailed in. For questions call the Special Events Office at 808-734-5058, ext. 262.

I volunteered as a helper in this year’s Science Symposium. It was a great experience. I have actually attended this in 8th grade and I learned many interesting things. It was really fun helping younger girls learn about many things that they have never even heard about! I love science and I really hope those kids come back next year and join us on a fun experience just on science!

Although I have never been to one of our Science Symposiums I have only heard great things about it. Science being one of my favorite subjects, I think it’s great to see that more and more are getting interested in the subject. Science can not only help in the classroom, but it can help in other subjects and in life. Pursuing a career in the field is one of the options I am considering when I get older. Science opens up your imagination to a world filled with robots, earth studies, etc. I think it’s wonderful that this option is opened to 5th- 8th grade!

I think the Science Symposium is a great opportunity for girls my age to learn about the things each individual loves in a super fun way! I was a volunteer with my friend Sola at the “The World Of Robotics Rocks!” workshop with Mrs. Robertson. We had a really fun time watching and mentoring the girls, who love robotics as much as we do, to complete the task of getting the granola bars at the finish line for their group. My mom also liked the Science Symposium because there was a diligent speaker and gave some very helpful tips to the parents. My friends who went to the Science Symposium (Kalei, Ji Yeon, and Paige) loved it because they got a chance to learn more about the things that they love. Sacred Hearts Academy should put on the Science Symposium every year because everyone who attends will love it and it is a great opportunity to learn about the things you love!!!

I think that the Science Symposium is a great idea because it lets students learn about some jobs that include science. I went to the Science Symposium twice and I really liked it, I learned a lot from the two times I went and plan on going next year too. it should stay the same it is because it really good, also there is a lot of sections that students can take to find their interests in. I hope that this will continue and help students find their future job.

I enjoyed the Science Symposium. I hope we have it again next year. I learned a lot of new things from this event. They should have more topics next year. I have friends who also enjoyed it. This was an event that was interesting and fun.
