Choir performs with other schools in the Hoolokahi Festival

Sacred Hearts’ Choir and Select Choir participated in the Hoolokahi Choir Festival presented by The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) for the third year.

The choir performed with the University of Hawaii Chamber Singers directed by Angel Felipe.

The University of Hawaii’s Chamber Singers performed “St Godric’s Hymn” from Sacred and Profane, “Euroclydon,” “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” and “Yamko Rambe Yamko.”

“The Chamber singers were amazing, especially because they sang a capella,” said choir member Maya Waldrep.

Other choirs, including the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, Iolani School, Island School and Kahuku High School, participated as well.

The choirs performed “Ose Ayo,” “The Water is Wide Praise the Lord,” “O Makalapua,” “O Nata Lux,” “Light Born of Light” and “Turn the World Around.”

Sophomore Ye Eun Lee said, “This year we did a lot more singing. It was a really great experience and I loved working with people from other schools and can’t wait to participate next year!”

The festival was directed by Dr. Edith A. Copley, a Regents’ Professor and Director of Choral Studies at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Copley has received numerous honors, including the NAU School of Performing Arts Centennial Teacher of the Year Award, Arizona Music Educator of the Year and the Viola Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music in Flagstaff.

Beebe Freitas, a graduate of Oberlin College and Julliard, was the accompanist. She has been a soloist with several orchestras including the Boston Pops and the Honolulu Symphony. Freitas has been the recipient of several honors, including the Honpa Hongwanji Mission’s Living Treasure Award, the City and County of Honolulu Commision on Culture and the Arts Award and the Hawaii Arts Alliance’s prestigious Alfred Preis Award.
