Alumna Yvonne Slaughter passes away at age 59

Yvonne Slaughter, mother of graduates Stefannye McElrath and Jeanessa and ReiMalyssa Slaughter, passed away last week at the age of 59.

Slaughter, also an alumna, was heavily involved in multiple programs at Sacred Hearts. She and her husband Tim ran the Project Graduation planning committee for the graduations of their three daughters. Slaughter was also a supporter of the Sacred Hearts band.

“When there was something that needed to be done, Yvonne Slaughter would step up,” said Lurline Choy, Freshman Division Adviser. “She was just endless, a real worker.

“I never heard her say anything negative about anyone,” said Choy. “She could take a negative and make it a positive. Not many people can do that.”

Slaughter’s funeral was held last Friday. According to Choy, the chapel was filled with Slaughter’s classmates and parents she had worked with.

“It says something about her, that so many people were there,” said Choy. “She was definitely loved. She was very vibrant, very active and admired by the parents she worked with.”

After her daughters graduated from the Academy, Slaughter continued her work with the Sacred Hearts Academy Band Boosters.

In lieu of donations, contributions to the Academy’s Band Boosters were suggested.

“The Academy’s mascot is the Lancer, the protector, the brave, the fighter. That’s Yvonne,” said Choy. “She’s an icon. She is a true Lancer.”
