SFA makes a difference in student life

Student Faculty and Administration (SFA) is a forum of homeroom senators in grades 7-12 for the purpose of open engagement and communication between students, faculty and administration.

Adviser Toni Normand said, “ Our SFA follows the guidelines of The National Association of Student Councils by setting a positive course for others to follow, giving every student a chance to be heard and to make every student feel welcome and a part of school life.”

This year SFA is geared towards engagement with ice breakers at the beginning of meetings in hopes of getting senators to feel confident and comfortable with speaking with others.

Sophomore Alex Somera said, “I really like the ice breakers that they have, especially the ones with gift cards. They get me motivated to stay engaged in what we’re discussing at that meeting.”

Students who are not senators can attend these meetings to voice their concerns although SFA encourages senators to take ideas and concerns from homerooms and bring them up during monthly meetings’ open forum.

Sophomore Chloe Delos Reyes said, “This is my first year in SFA and I feel like I can express my opinions and concerns from my homeroom openly with the other senators and Mrs. Normand.”

SFA has had many successful accomplishments such as the approval of various school jackets and larger lockers

Lockers used to be 12×12 inches and made of metal and had to be spray painted. Comments from senators about the locker size provided the input to purchase the plastic and much larger lockers that students have now.

Twelve years ago, the bell schedule was quite different. After the issues of having seven classes a day and school ending at 2:50, administrators considered changes and today’s schedule exists. The current schedule enables students to better manage their time and allow teachers sufficient teaching time.

Vice-principal Linda Debo said, “Sometimes changes take a long time and sometimes they can take effect immediately. Sometimes things can be done but sometimes they cannot. However, ideas are always taken into consideration.”
