Sacred Hearts Academy’s Oahu Mathematics League (OML) team consists of 25 members who meet two to four times a week, practicing Mondays and Thursdays during lunch and Thursdays and Fridays after school.
Mathematics Chair Deborah Kula said, “ It’s not too late to join! Math League increases test skills in a friendly and competitive environment.”
Members practice to prepare for monthly competitions. These competitions correspond with the time of year and advancement of the math courses.
Participants enjoy math because there are set answers and students feel a sense of accomplishment when they understand a problem or get the correct answer.
“I was in the junior high math league and I figured why not join? I really like math and it is always so fun,” said sophomore Victoria Lee.
Kula and math teacher Tim Cantley advise the team, organizing transportation, participants, practices and snacks.
On Sept. 15 at Moanalua, the team placed 7th of 18 schools that participated in the Newton category. On Oct. 13 at Mckinley High School the team placed 6th out of 18. The team’s next meet is on Nov. 17 at Kaiser High School for problems in geometry, algebra and trigonometry.
Sophomore Isabel Lee said, “I joined to be with friends and it turned out to be really great. There’s a lot of food, fun and functions!”
