Setting goals for the new school year will set one up for success

To set goals is a common occurrence at the start of a new school year. Many students set goals to push themselves to achieve the highest rewards possible. Goal setting gives one motivation to achieve one’s long-term vision.

Common goals tend to be about relationships with family and friends, success in education or careers, growing closer to God and sometimes achieving recognition.

High school counselor, Donna Ramos, said, “People create goals to feel successful. No one likes to fail, and when you achieve it, people feel like they accomplished something big.”

Being successful in reaching a goal, however, is not an easy task.

Counselor Amy Young said, “ To reach a goal takes a lot of small incremental steps. You need to break the task down into smaller goals and achieve each step over time.”

Ramos said, “ To be successful it helps to consult with mentors or a support system which has achieved their goal so that they can help you to be successful.”

Setting a deadline is another step in accomplishing a goal. Without a deadline it is less likely that students will go after them.

Many students set goals for academic excellence.

Junior Dominique Dold said, “Every year I set a goal to maintain a 4.0 grade point average. I study hard for each test and quiz and make sure that I finish all my homework.”

Creating goals for activities and character is also good for success in life.

Sophomore Tiana Wong said, “ My goal each cheer season is to improve on pushing myself to be even better then I was the previous season. I am still in the process of accomplishing this task, by training hard every day at practice.”

Although teens set goals, they aren’t always successful in achieving them.

Ramos said, “Setting a plan B or second goal is always good. It works as a safety net. If you don’t reach your first goal, you are still achieving something to keep you positive.”

Having a plan helps. The term “SMART” can help.

  • ● “S” for specific
  • ● “M” for measurable
  • ● “A” for attainable
  • ● “R” for relevant
  • ● “T” for time-bound.
  • This can help students determine if a goal is realistic and reachable.
