Choosing Between Laptop or Tablet Technology

As the desktop computer evolved into the laptop computer, the previous models became obsolete. Now, the laptop computer is evolving into the tablet computer, such as the iPad, and some may question whether the transition is worth the added cost. For students especially, the choice between a tablet and a laptop computer has many pros and cons.

For starters, one must consider what her technological needs are. For a student, functionality and practicality of the device is a top priority; thus, characteristics, including battery life, display and size, are important factors when deciding between an iPad and a laptop.

The iPad boasts an extensive battery life of about 10 hours while most laptops last for about five hours before they need to be recharged. Thus, if one desires many hours of usage without the need to plug in and recharge, the iPad is the better option.

Although laptops generally have a larger screen and thus may be preferred for that reason, the iPad’s screen has a high definition display that can be seen from almost every angle. Thus, the better choice for those who want to view pictures in higher definition or watch HD movies will probably prefer the iPad over a laptop computer.

Another important functional feature, especially for students, is the keyboard. The iPad does feature a touch screen keyboard function; however, the quality of typing that comes from using a traditional keyboard is usually faster and more accurate, thus making the laptop a better choice for those who will need to type often and for long assignments.

Certain applications may be difficult to use on the iPad as compared to a laptop. For those who may be interested in photography or digital art, software such as Photoshop are not available for the iPad. Also, for serious gamers, the lack of keyboard and mouse could make playing their favorite games more difficult on the iPad’s touch-only screen. In that regard, the laptop would be the better choice for those who use many hands-on programs and have need of a computer’s convenient hardware.

The issue of memory is also important to consider when deciding between a laptop and tablet computer. The iPad does not have a USB port or CD drive, thus making it difficult to transfer information via external sources. Most laptops feature more than one USB port and CD and DVD capabilities. USBs are an important resource for most students to transfer and store information; thus, the absence of this feature could be problematic. For those who work with many documents, presentations, and other assignments that may need to be shared or transferred, the laptop is the better choice.

The iPad may also have hidden expenses resulting from having to purchase movies, apps and other resources that could otherwise just be facilitated in a laptop. However, as iPad use becomes more widespread, more student friendly apps and programs, such as text books, are being created for it, which are often cheaper than a hard copy. The iPad also has highlighting and other note-taking features which are quicker and more user friendly than the typical Microsoft Word software for laptops. In this regard, the iPad is an innovative choice for those who want quick, user friendly note-taking.

Another feature to consider is the issue of size. IPads are lighter and more portable than laptops as well as more comfortable to hold and interact with. Where heavier laptops may become overheated and a bulky nuisance, the nimble iPad is light, comfortable to hold and does not get too hot after extended use. Thus, if one values portability and comfort, the iPad is the better choice because it is lightweight and has light accessories as well, as compared to heavy laptops with heavy laptop cases and chargers.

The choice between the iPad and laptop is one that must be closely analyzed before deciding what type of computer is best for the user. Thinking of one’s specific needs and practicalities will certainly help in making the right decision.
