Student choreographed dances and professional lighting and sound new changes in May Day

This year’s annual May Day program will feature professional musicians and held for the first time in the evening.

“We want to showcase all of the talent at our school and also give the students more opportunity for leadership,” director Lauren Williams said.

Hula will be choreographed by students with costumes made by students and taught. The Hawaiian Chant and dance classes will be using skills they learned in class.

“By switching to students producing and creating the program we are giving them real world opportunities to use the skills taught in the Hawaiian Chant and Dance class,” Williams said.

The show will also double as the Spring Showcase for the modern dance classes. In addition to the division hulas, the Hawaiian Chant and Dance classes will be performing as well.

Williams hopes that the evening program in the evening will alleviate some of the parking problems that usually accompany multiple May Day programs during the day. She also hopes that having the program then will enable more parents to watch their daughters perform.

The program will have professional lights and sound by Chris Patrinos of Toka Media and professional musicians led by Chad Takatsugi.

“Professional lighting effects allow us to highlight our dancers’ performances,” Williams said.

“We would like to elevate the production level to put on a more professional show,” she said. “This May Day is a chance for authentic learning experiences for the students in the Hawaiian Chant and Dance classes who are responsible for everything from choosing the theme to picking out lei and adornments.”

Tickets will be sold for $5 each beginning in April.
