In July, the National Riflery Association (NRA) Championships were held in Camp Perry, Ohio. The NRA Championship is a competition for high school shooters from all 50 states and South Africa. In total there were 235 shooting teams in the competition. 30 of those shooters represented Hawaii.

Sophomore Sara Tashima was one of the biggest winners. Tashima won first place for shooting in the prone position. Shooters lie on their stomachs while shooting. Tashima was the national rifle champion of Sacred Hearts Academy. She shot a total of 798 out of 800. Tashima also set 5 national records in the junior prone position category.

“When they announced that Sara had won, we all went into absolute shock. We could not believe what we just heard. I felt so happy for Sara! After the state of shock past, all the Hawaii teams intensely screamed for Sara’s win,” said air riflery coach Guy Chun.

“I was not really nervous for the championships. I shot just like I would in any other competition,” said Tashima who competed in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) as a freshman for the Academy.

Until the end, Tashima was shoulder to shoulder with opponent, ending with a tie. Tashima and her opponent then shared the gold medal title because of their shooting scores which were exactly the same.

“I am extremely happy for my teammate and I am proud to have been able to compete alongside her at Nationals,” said sophomore Danielle Ho.

Sacred Hearts Academy’s air riflery will be traveling back to Camp Perry in the summer of 2012 if they qualify for nationals once again.

“It was so much fun being in Ohio with all my teammates and competing in a competition. I hope to make it to nationals again, and I am going to try my best to win,” said Tashima.
