Leos welcome Venture Scouts from Osaka

Venture Scouts, similar to American Boy and Girl Scouts, from Osaka shared a dinner with members of the Academy Leo club on Mar. 22 in the Student Center.

For the last two decades, students from the Osaka Scouts have come to Hawaii for a weeklong “Rainbow Camp.”

Leo club adviser Whitney Miyahira said, “The scouts are from Osaka and it’s been a part of their tradition to come to Hawaii for a week as a part of their training. It is basically like a survival camp. The scouts get a mission every day that they have to complete. They navigate around Waikiki using whatever skills they have.”

At the dinner, Academy students provided homemade desserts, entertainment and games for the visitors. The scouts reciprocated by providing demonstrations of calligraphy, the tea ceremony (orurasenke), Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day) celebration activities and a performance of the song “Soran Bushi.”

Leo club President Victoria Lee said, “Because we had previous experience with other scouts, we knew that it was a tradition to hand out business cards, contact cards, so that’s something we encouraged all Leos to make so we could keep in contact. Every year we always exchange performances and games.”

Seniors Alyssa Kwan and Victoria Lee were inducted into the Waikiki Lions Club, the adult equivalent of the Leo club, a service organization.

“Being inducted is a blessing because I know a lot of students who don’t immediately become Lions after graduating. The Leo to Lion is a special thing, so I feel very blessed and it makes me feel proud because I can continue to help the Leos as a Lion,” said Lee.
