With the release of the new song, “I Wanna Get Better,” indie pop band Bleachers has achieved quick success. The group’s debut album, “Strange Desire,” released last July, brought even more attention to their music.

Senior Erica Freitas said, “I hadn’t really heard of Bleachers much before I found out they were coming to Hawaii because they were so new. Then, I heard them on the radio and really began to start listening to their music.”

Jack Antonoff founded the band as a solo project while on tour with his other band Fun.

The New York City-based band is noted for its emotional pop sound, which is heavily influenced by the music of the 1980s.

In an interview with “Rolling Stone,” Antonoff said, “I’ve gotten a lot from music, hearing other people’s stories. It talks a lot about the challenging and more horrible things I’ve been through. ‘I Wanna Get Better’ is a perfect example of that. The words are very literal. A lot of people might think it’s dark, but to me it’s very hopeful. It’s about moving on and finding ways to be kind to yourself.”

In the spring of this year, Bleachers set out on its first tour which officially opened with a concert at Oahu’s The Republik on Feb. 28.

Senior Lindsay Visher said, “I love Bleachers not just for their sound, but because they’re really relatable. Their songs ‘I Wanna Get Better’ and ‘You’re Still a Mystery’ are honest and say things that we all feel and that we all can connect with. They’re amazing.”
