Fall choir concert lifts spirits

Recently, the chapel was filled with the angelic voices of Sacred Hearts Academy’s choir, as part of its annual fall concert.

The select choir, directed by Alec Schumacker, began the concert from the top of the chapel, using their voices to captivate the audience. They sang a Spanish song depicting a text from the gospel of Matthew.

Before each song, students explained the piece they were going to sing and what they thought about it.

The concert continued with the beginning choir, which was separated by different class periods. Period 1 sang “Arise and Clap Your Hands,” which included three student soloists. They were seventh graders Alya Akikawa, Mari Oyer and Madeleine Thompson.

“It was a lovely evening with songs (from) around the world sung very beautifully,” Schumacker said.

The next beginning choir class started with a collaborative piece between the choir and band, which was a first for the school. Junior Alyssa Kawauchi played the flute.

Intermediate choir concluded their portion of the concert with “Step by Step,” a song composed by Arizona choir teacher Erik Whitehill. Whitehill, who is a friend of Academy choir teacher Zachary Moore, visited Academy students earlier in the year.

Concert choir finished their portion of the concert with “Hail Holy Queen” from the movie “Sister Act.” “Hail Holy Queen” is a fun, upbeat song about Mother Mary.

Select choir started with student conductor senior Shelly Aquino. She conducted “Tantsulaul.” The choir was accompanied by violin and cello players for the song “Lie Light.” Select choir concluded with artist Meghan Trainor’s pop song “No.”

All choir classes came together to finish the concert with “Shout Glory,” a song that will be showcased in this year’s “Na Leo Hou: Hawaii’s All-State Choral Festival.”
