May brings showers of performances

May is an eventful month for the Performing Arts department.

Plays directed and performed by students were presented during “A Night of Choices” at St. Louis School’s Mamiya Theatre on May 3. Themes concerned the issues of peer pressure, drinking and cigarette smoking and was the culminating project of the Director’s Internship Program, led by director Kyle Kakuno to teach students the basics of directing a stage production.

On May 6, students of Micki Kolberg’s dance classes are holding a Choreographer’s Showcase in the Sacred Hearts auditorium at 6 p.m. The performance entails student-choreographed dances of all styles, ranging from ballet to hip hop. In addition to choreographing the dances, students must choose the music, costumes and lighting for the performance.

The Academy’s choir, directed by Dr. Alec Schumacker, is holding its annual spring concert on May 8 at 6 p.m. in the Academy chapel. The Select Choir will also perform at the retirement party of several faculty members on May 17.

Band students are performing in an Aloha Concert on May 11 at 6. p.m. at Mamiya Theatre. The concert, directed by Keith Higaki, includes students from all levels of the band program as well as members of the drumline and wind ensemble.
