The Academy’s Parent Board and school counselors held a self-defense workshop, Protect Yourself: Be smart. Be ready. Be safe., on Mar. 7.

The event featured Taekwondo Honolulu and the Honolulu Theater for Youth.

While students participated in an interactive performance on dating and relationships, their parents went to the “Start the Conversation Toolkit” presentation and discussion in the auditorium.

In the student session, students witnessed how sexual assault can impact lives negatively. Each student represented a fictional character who played a role as the result of sexual violence. This allowed students to understand the seriousness of the situation more closely.

Senior Minami Inafuku said, “I really enjoyed the workshop, especially when we learned actual self-defense techniques. After the sessions, I feel much safer because I know more about dangerous situations and how to protect myself effectively.”

In the “Start the Conversation Toolkit,” parents learned about how sexual assault can lead to larger issues, including depression and social anxiety. They also discussed how to talk about difficult topics and setting boundaries with their children. Parents also were part of simulated situations.

Parent Nadine Yim said, “I found the ‘Start the Conversation’ part of the workshop enlightening. I was surprised to learn the dangers of sexting and the law.”
