Students and faculty were among the many thousand runners who participated and volunteered in the 30th annual Great Aloha Run (GAR) on Feb.17.
The 8.15-mile GAR began at the Aloha Tower and finished at Aloha Stadium. All Academy physical education students ran, accompanied by nearly 30 other students.
Senior Lauren Arakawa said, “I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed running. At first, eight miles seems intimidating, but when you’re with your friends, the distance is covered faster than expected.”
Math teacher, Ed Mendez, also appreciated the physical activity.
“Although we had to wake up early on a holiday, the Great Aloha Run was worth taking part in. Running in the organized event was fun and I’m glad I took the time to be more active,” said Mendez.
The Sacred Hearts Leo club volunteered at the event, handing out finisher T-shirts at the end of the race.
Senior Kasandra Kitagawa said, “The Leo club has consistently volunteered at the Great Aloha Run since our sponsor, the Kamehameha Lions Club, runs the finish line station. This year over 15 members from the Academy helped at the end of the race.”
A joint Sacred Hearts-St. Louis team participated in the school challenge after the race, placing second in the competition. The challenge included competitions such as jumping rope and an inverted crawl. The relay team consisted of 10 Academy students and 10 St. Louis boys.
Athletic Director, Ryan Hogue, “We had such a large representation at the Great Aloha Run, giving the school much recognition. We’re extremely proud of all those who participated.”
