Sixth graders made their annual trip to Kauai in early March, traveling around the island and participating in community service projects and activities.
Teacher Griff Jurgens said, “I think the trip is an extremely beneficial opportunity for the children, having learning experiences outside the classroom. Through the service activities, they understand first hand how working together can accomplish a goal in a short amount of time.”
Students explored the kalo, or taro, patch and learned about native plants of Hawaii from Waipa Foundation. The learning center aims to educate the community about Hawaii’s environment and traditions.
Students also visited popular landmarks, including Waimea Canyon, Waioli Mission House and Captain Cook’s landing.
Samantha Seto said, “In science we are learning about landforms and how water erosion affects canyons. It was amazing to see Waimea Canyon because it was a real-life version of what we talked about in class.”
At Hui o Laka, students were involved in the eradication of invasive plant species.
Mary Soxpollard said, “I enjoyed cutting down the ginger, clearing out the forest for workers who dig up the roots. This allowed them to plant new vegetation, so I was happy we were able to contribute.”
Kayla Park said, “Overall, the trip allowed me to spend time with my classmates and get to know them better. It brought us closer as a grade.”

I remember that trip! I loved learning and helping. This project is a great way to get kids outside to help the earth. It’s also a good way to teach things that you can’t in a classroom.

My younger sister went on this trip, and she keeps talking about how amazing it was. She had lots of fun. This article was nice because it sums everything up. Good job!

I remember going on the 6th Grade Kawaii trip. Going on the Kawaii trip is a great experience for students. I am glad to read that other 6th graders also enjoyed their trip.
