Lancers fill ‘empty bowls’ to help food insecurity

Freshman McKinnely Harris stars as Princess Ariel in this year’s “Little Mermaid Jr.” production at Sacred Hearts Academy. In her first year at the Academy, Harris took on the lead role in her first Mo‘olelo Studios production. She performed alongside students from several Oahu schools in the musical staged in the Academy’s auditorium. Harris also appeared on KHON2’s morning show to promote the production, which featured immersive projections and drew families, alumnae and community members to campus. “Holding the lead role is such an honor, and it really tests your ability to stay humble and kind,” Harris said, adding that Ariel is her favorite Disney princess. To prepare, Harris watched multiple versions of “The Little Mermaid,” studied other productions online and repeatedly reviewed her script. “I had to act softer and more curious, which was a little more difficult for me because of my volleyball background,” she said, adding that dyeing her hair red helped complete Ariel’s look and personality.
