The new trend of “do it yourself” (DIY) has become a way to get around buying expensive products. The inexpensive nature of DIY attracts many teens. Headbands, nose cleaning strips, nail designs and much more are examples of products that can be done at home. Tutorials on web sites such as Youtube, also provide quick DIY tips.
Junior Noel Kenny said, “ I look for things that I can do myself such as doing my own nails. On Youtube there was a tutorial how to do a fade nails design and I did it myself for prom. Doing my own nails saved me fifty dollars.”
In comparison to ready-made products, making these is cheaper.
Other benefits of DIY include learning new skills, customizing products to one’s needs and becoming more self-sufficient. New skills can be used throughout one’s life and repeated over and over.
Sophomore Sara Martell said, “ Skills that I have learned from DIY are how to do hairstyles, make headbands and various jewelry. I use these skills whenever I want another piece of jewelry or a new hairstyle. When I go shopping now, I look at a product identical to the one I made myself at double the price. DIY are skills that everyone should learn.”
