The Honolulu Festival was celebrated from March 2-3 as Academy students from Leo club and Japanese classes participated in the festival parade.
Leo club members were chosen to ride on a trolley and hold signs where Japanese students volunteered their services by carrying a Japanese shrine.
Japanese student Jamie Yoo said, “ I volunteered in the Honolulu Festival parade for the first time this year and it was a fun experience. I was able to spend time with friends from my Japanese classes and also hear Japanese by native speakers throughout the day. This was a good learning experience and also gave me community service.”
Leo club Vice-president Christine Nyguen said, “ As junior members of Lions International we represented our club in the parade because we are an international service club. The Honolulu Festival provided good community service for our members.”

From this article it looks like the volunteers enjoyed their time at the festival. This is a great way to get community service hours and to exercise Japanese speaking ability. Next year I’ll be sure to volunteer at the festival.

This is great that students from Sacred Hearts volunteer to help out the parade because they got to learn and experience things.

I think this is a great way for Japanese students to learn how to speak Japanese rather than attending a lecture.

I think that the Leo Club and Japanese classes volunteering for the Honolulu Festival Parade sounded like a good experience for them to learn about different cultures and being able to get community service hours. I thought that learning the Japanese culture would help them improve there Japanese speaking skills and their knowledge about Japan, also the Leo Club members will help them learn different cultures and different languages. I hope that one I will be able to have the same great experience they did when they went to the Honolulu Festival Parade.

I think that it’s great that our school participated in the Honolulu Festival. Also I think this is a great way to learn Japanese culture outside of school. The Leo club sounds really fun~

I think that it is good that our school participates in other things out of school. I hope that when I get into a club I could do something like this.

I think this activity is a good influence if your trying to learn more about the Japanese Culture. It sounded really fun! I hope I can try this in the future.

I think that having girls from the Japanese class going to an event with Native-Speakers was a great way for them to improve their Japanese speaking skills! I also thought that the Leo Club going to this event was also great for them to learn more about different cultures as well! I hope that one day I can join you all to enjoy it!

I think it is a great community/learning experience for the students, not only to serve, but to represent Sacred Hearts in a big event.

I think that it is a great learning experience for the Japanese students to be hearing conversations in Japanese.
