Through sports, students learn valuable lessons that can be used in their future occupations and personal lives. Sports provide an opportunity for children to learn teamwork, goal-setting, motivation, how to take constructive criticism, sportsmanship and competitiveness.
Aggressiveness and the willingness to compete and win are common in human nature. An athlete’s competitive edge can separate her from the next. However, losing one’s humility and respect for other players changes the game.
Track runner, Tiffany Atud, said, “When I was younger, being competitive and staying positive with others and myself was harder to do; but over the years I have grown in maturity and instead of taking my emotions out on others, I take it out on the track.”
Being sportsmanlike doesn’t just mean always being positive. It is always good to have high expectations and useful criticism.
Cheerleader Courtney Malina said, “Cheer competitions can be very stressful. We get on each other to make every detail perfect because we need each and every point we can get. Although we can be tough, we aren’t negative; we are just constructive. I think that being in a team environment kids learn how to respect each other while expecting nothing but the best from each other.”
When an athlete’s adrenaline is climbing, it can be hard to keep composed and calm.
Wrestler Kelli-Ann Omatsu said, “Losing always plays with your mental game. Knowing that you are behind already gives you a disadvantage. When my emotions are getting the best of me, it is hard to keep calm but all I focus on is breathing and my match.”

This is a very good article showing the benefits of playing sports. Sportsmanship is very important and these athletes definitely have it. This article helps those who could be beginning to play sports and inspire those who are still playing.

I think that this article is very well said and informative. It reminds me of what i learned through the past year I have been playing sports as well. I agree with Tiffany’s statement on letting the anger and energy out on the field. Playing sports is a good way for us to become a leader in life

I really liked this article because I can relate very well to it as well. Since I play basketball and it gets really aggressive I know what it’s like. I agree with these students on the fact that having good sportsmanship and a good attitude makes you more of a team player. If you are a competitive player on the court but after the game you are nice and have good sportsmanship, that will be apart of your character and you will be known for that.

I like the way you wrote this article. You showed how being positive is a good way to connect with a team. Also how sportsmanship is very important and how it builds every year.

I think that this was a great article. This article shows how sportsmanship is built over the years and being apart of a team. Being in this school also builds alot of the character that’s shown on the field as well. Everyone has their own opinion of how to build character and how they became the player they are which I thought was very interesting.
