Senior Kealakekua Makekau joined 52 other soccer and football student athletes at the PIAA National Letter of Intent Day, held at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on Feb. 6.
Makekau said, “Signing was so exciting and relieving. I finally felt stress-free. Over the years I worked so hard to get to where I am now, and I just felt so happy to finally know what’s next for me.”
Makekau played four years on the Lancer varsity soccer team and will now join the “Wolves” at Western Oregon University where she is receiving a soccer scholarship.
Varsity soccer coach Adria Campbell said, “In the short period of time I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Keala, she has exceeded expectations on many levels. Keala is one of the most technically gifted players I’ve ever seen, and I’m sure she will make an immediate impact upon arrival in Oregon.”
Athletic Director, Wade Okumura, said, “Keala is the third soccer player to sign with the PIAA in the last three years. This is a good indicator that we have student athletes that are capable to play at the next level.”
Makekau said, “It was truly a great experience. All my club teammates were signing next to me and we realized that all our dreams of playing collegiate soccer were coming true.”
