Sacred Hearts Academy LEO club hosts its annual charter night dance to raise money and awareness of bullying on Jan. 25 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Chin’s showroom located on the second floor at the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
LEO club is affiliated with Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organization with 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members. Lions Clubs International was started in 1917 in Chicago and in 1920 became an international organization. The mission of Lions Clubs International is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through clubs.
The Leadership, Experience and Opportunity (LEO) Club, the junior program of Lions Clubs International started in 1957 in Pennsylvania. The purpose of the LEO club is to give the world’s youth an opportunity “for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.”
Since 2009, the Academy’s LEO club has worked to make the community a better place through identifying community needs, working with other community organizers, calculating costs, finalizing details and publicizing projects.
“The Academy LEO club was started by alumna Mai Shiomi with the first LEO club of the Kamehameha Lions Club division with 24 members that included mostly eighth graders and seniors,” said vice-president Christine Nguyen.
“The LEO clubs from Sacred Hearts Academy, La Pietra and Kalani High School are hosting the ‘LEOs Against Bullying Dance’ which aims to bring awareness of bullying to the community,” said director Gabrielle Del Rosario.
“Every participating individual at this event will be eligible for one of several scholarships given during the evening along with other prizes, like an autographed picture of Jennifer Lawrence, actress in ‘The Hunger Games,’” said president Kasandra Kitagawa.
“The dress code for the dance is casual attire, but keep in mind that the clothing is a reflection of the Lions Club International, so please be respectful,” said Kitagawa.
The entertainment for Charter Night is DJ Kutmaster Spaz and Virgin Mary. Tickets are presale, but a select number of tickets will be available at the door for $10, which includes all beverages, food, entertainment, door prizes and photo booth. Tickets are “first come, first served.” There is also flat rate parking available for $5 all night.
