After months of anticipation, the Clarence T.C. Ching Student Center opened on Aug. 13.
“I have been waiting for the student center since we heard the announcement of the grant. Watching the destruction and construction of our student center was interesting because it was so quick. I am impressed with the advances and improvements made to our student center,” junior Meryl Mindo said.
The student center doesn’t just have a new cafeteria, including more eco-friendly features, it also has a healthier menu, light and more space for social gatherings.
Development Director Andrea Hamilton said, “The new center includes solar water heating. No air conditioners were installed because the design takes advantage of the tradewinds and windows are positioned to get good air flow throughout the center. Plus, the huge fans help to circulate the air.”
Freshman Janelle Medrano said, “Coming to Sacred Hearts Academy from a small school is really stunning. I am glad to be one of the first students who are able to experience the student center. The facilities are impressive, and I cannot wait to see what improvements will be made in the future. ”
Changes have also been made to the food service part of the center. The center includes a professional kitchen staffed by Sodexo, the new catering company.
With the 5210 initiative begun last year, Sacred Hearts is also striving to improve the health of its students and staff by promoting a healthy diet. There will be space for vegetable gardens, a composting area and a rain garden that will collect rainwater and distribute it to other parts of the landscaped areas that will be cared for by the Hawaiian language classes.
“I am impressed with the new attitude that Sacred Hearts has this school year. I am a strong believer in eating healthy and exercise; therefore, the school’s new attitude is refreshing. It gives the students a chance to be healthy at school even if those options are not offered at home”; junior Noel Kenny said.
