It was a magical week for the Junior Class as it celebrated Junior Week, “A Week at SHAgwarts.”
The class enjoyed unique activities based on the popular J.K. Rowling book series “Harry Potter” throughout the week.
During the week, a golden snitch was hidden on the campus and the person who found the snitch gained 50 points for her house, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
“One of our goals was to have every student participate at some point during the week,” said Wendi Vincent, Junior Class adviser. “Splitting the division up into the four houses helped with that, while instilling a sense of camaraderie within each house as teammates worked together toward a common goal.”
Raquel Reeves, part of team Hufflepuff said, “When I found the snitch, I felt like I won $1,000.”
The first day of Junior Week, the council created its very own “Honeydukes,” a candy store from the series. Students enjoyed getting treats for five galleons. Juniors also participated in a scavenger hunt, and each house was judged on accessory coordination.
“The scavenger hunt was my favorite event of the week,” said Kealakekua Makekau, team Ravenclaw. “It was a good workout and it was exciting.”
On the second day, juniors met in the gym during homeroom to compete against each other in a tug-of-war and relay race. They enjoyed “acid” pops at recess and spent the break searching the campus for the snitch. Each house was determined to find the small ball since Slytherin had found the ball so easily the day before. During lunch, students participated in a jelly bean tasting contest and a trivia game based on the Harry Potter movies and books.
“The competition aspect of the week and the authenticity of the week was my favorite part,” Christina Perreira, team Gryffindor, said. “I really liked this week.”
On Wednesday, juniors met in the gym to compete in “Capture the Dragon’s Egg,” a magical version of “Capture the Flag.”
On the last day, juniors enjoyed skipping their last class of the day to enjoy Jamba Juice and a viewing of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in the auditorium.
The closing ceremonies were held on Friday with the championships for Capture the Dragon’s Egg taking place in the gym. Team Gryffindor emerged victorious in the championship game.
“Friendly competition is a good thing because it enables people to rise to the occasion,” Vincent said. “I was surprised by the amount of effort students put into the challenges.”
“A Week at SHAgwarts” ended with Hufflepuff being the big winner, Slytherin came in second, Gryffindor third and Ravenclaw fourth. The standings were determined by the number of points earned in the different competitions, including which house raised the most money for Loliana Hale, a homeless shelter. The Junior Class, as a whole, raised $500 for Loliana Hale.
Juniors thoroughly enjoyed this theme of “A Week at SHAgwarts.”
“This Junior Week was really fun,” said Noemi Yoshida, team Slytherin. “It really brought the entire Junior Class together as well as the rest of the high school! A lot of my friends – even in other grades – enjoyed SHAgwarts!”
“I couldn’t help but smile throughout the week, especially because many students were so excited during the challenges,” Vincent said. “I think this is a week we’ll all remember for the long haul.”
