Sophomore Phoebe Kirk placed first in the 800-meter run at the ILH track and field championships and second to Carmen Garson-Shumway from Hilo High School in the state championships. Less than two seconds separated her from first place.
Coach Cyril Pires said, “Phoebe is an extremely coachable athlete. She is always willing to put her team before herself but is never afraid to speak up to voice her opinion. She is a hard worker and never gives up.”
As Kirk is only a sophomore, she still has two years to compete to earn a spot in states in the 800-meter race.
Kirk said, “I am not so much upset with the place compared to the time. I feel that I could have pushed myself a little harder and those are the regrets that linger on my mind after big races, but I have learned so much from this season in regards to future training. My main goal next year is to use what I have learned and hopefully break a couple of records.”
