The Sacred Hearts Leos shared the aloha spirit with a group of scouts from Osaka, Japan, who were challenged to use survival skills on Oahu on Mar. 23
The Osaka Scouts’ program encouraged members to use their skills as they explored Oahu with limited assistance from leaders. Activities included scuba diving, exploring the beach and hiking.
At the dinner, Leos were able to communicate with the scouts through phrases and gestures about their interests, experiences and education.
Sophomore Isabel Yeoh said, “The Osaka Scouts were all really friendly. It was easy to start conversations with them. I enjoyed listening to them speak English and helping them. Many of them had impressive English. I hope to speak that well in my second language soon.”
Two Academy students shared their talent at the dinner. Eighth grader Kalei Cruz danced Ka Uluwehi o Ke Kai while junior Victoria Lee performed a traditional Chinese fan dance. The scouts, in turn, danced to a popular J-Pop number by artist Kyrary Pamyu Pamyu.
Later in the evening, after relating the March 11, 2011, Tohoku earthquake and tsunami to the April 1, 1946, tsunami in Hawaii, Leos helped to teach a hula to the song “Boy from Laupahoehoe.” The dance and song honored Lion Masuo Kino, a survivor of that tsunami.
Leo Club adviser, Whitney Miyahira, said, “I believe it is important in today’s century to network with others, especially those from other countries and backgrounds as we live in a global society. I hope that the students who attended gained some cultural insight and will keep in touch with their new friends and create lasting relationships. Next year, we are hoping to allow Leos to join the Osaka Scouts in more of their activities.”
The dinner was held at the Keehi Lagoon DAV Hall and sponsored by the Kamehameha Lions.
