The Living in Faith Experience (LIFE) team will host a water conservation week during the last week of January to raise school awareness of the issue and how consumers can avoid wasting this precious resource.
When the LIFE team attended the summer retreat in California, they encountered the issue. The scarcity of potable water could prove costly in the future. The team is informing the school about the issue and hopes to increase efforts at conservation.
“Meatless Monday” focuses on the water required to produce pork and poultry. In the United States, an average of 1,000 gallons per person is needed to produce meat.
The cafeteria will not serve meat on this day.
“Toothbrush Tuesday” emphasizes people’s wasteful tendencies when brushing their teeth, showering or bathing. If the tap is on when brushing teeth, five gallons of water will be used. Simply turning off the faucet makes a large impact. Additionally, a 10-minute shower uses 60 gallons. Since the average family of four uses 400 gallons of water per day, cutting back on usage at home is essential.
On “Water Bottle Wednesday” students are being asked to bring water bottles for the next day’s LIFE Walk activities rather than using paper cups.
The LIFE Walk is scheduled for Thursday.
Public Service Announcements (PSAs) will be aired throughout the week, providing statistics on water waste and how to cut down on usage.
