The 20th Annual Sacred Hearts Academy Science Symposium is a free workshop sponsored by Bank of Hawaii for girls in grades five through eight. The symposium features a keynote speaker for parents and hands-on workshops for students facilitated by local professionals and Academy teachers.
Students have the option of selecting two sessions from the 18 that are offered. All workshops allow participants to experience a variety of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities.
The workshops are aimed at allowing girls to explore potential STEM careers. The symposium gives girls information about exciting topics and dynamic roles women play in STEM fields.
Rodney Chang, Director of Special Events, said, “Some of the workshops that will be offered include developing surgical skills, wildlife biology, uncovering and viewing DNA and learning to survey the forest to preserve endangered species.”
The symposium also offers a “For Parents Only” session for parents to motivate and encourage their daughters to look beyond accepted, traditional barriers which can hinder their search in male-dominated professions. The session for parents includes techniques and pointers that will inspire their daughters to reach their full potential and consider non-traditional careers.
The symposium will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Academy from 7:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Registration forms can be found on the Sacred Hearts Academy school web site and submitted online, emailed or mailed.
