For the second year, the LEO Club has been asked to marshal at the annual Sony Open. Although the minimum age at the event is usually 18 years old, the PGA has made an exception for the student volunteers.
The Sony Open is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour and is a part of the FedEx Cup series. It started in 1965 and is held annually in January, making it the first full-field event of the PGA tour calendar. Notable appearances from the past include Isao Aoki, Tadd Fujikawa and Michelle Wie.
Junior Constance Young said, “I chose to volunteer at the Sony Open because it sounded like a good opportunity. Golf is something that I know absolutely nothing about, and I want to be able to learn new information outside of school. At the Sony Open, I will be forced to work with people I have never met before. This is a great way for me to get out of my shell. Since this is volunteer work, the community service is a bonus to everything.”
This year the official tournament is being held January 9 to 12.
Sophomore Kennedy Cambra-Cho said, “I’m really excited to volunteer at such a major event like this. I think it’s a great opportunity to meet fellow LEO members from different school and have fun at the same time.”
Marshals are in charge of the gallery. They quiet the crowd at appropriate times, such as when the golfer is ready to play the ball, and enforce PGA rules, including the restriction of cell phone use outside designated areas.
Seventh grader Kayla Park said, “Volunteering at this event will give me a lot of hours, but I also volunteered because my grandpa likes golf so it’s a good way for me to have something to talk about with him.”
Students will volunteer from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 12 at the 18th hole of the Waialae Country Club.
