Senior Courtney Malina was recognized as Lancer of the Month for November. Malina is the co-captain of the cheerleading squad and was earlier selected as ILH Cheerleader of the Year.
In the final ILH cheerleading competition of the year, Malina dislocated her elbow while doing a roundoff back-handspring but did not stop performing.
Malina said, “I could feel my elbow dangling and I had no control over it. I knew that I really damaged it, but it was my last cheer comp and I wanted to finish strong.”
The trainers finally stopped the routine because they knew she would damage her elbow further if she kept going.
Malina has shown herself to be an excellent leader.
Cheerleading coach Chanel Moke Puha said, “Courtney has always been a perfect example of what a Lancer Crusader cheerleader should be. She has pride for the schools she is representing, respects her teammates and leads by example. She is very deserving of both recognition not based on a particular moment, but by her day-to-day actions and the example she continues to set.”
In addition to cheerleading, Malina is a member of the Halau Aloha ‘O Pu’uwailani and member of the Soroptimist Club, all while maintaining a GPA of 3.95.
Malina said, “Through high school sports, clubs and hula, I’ve learned a lot about time management and how to deal with stress. It was not easy at all dealing with multiple activities, but it was worth it. I have gained a lot of valuable lessons and friendships that I will keep forever.”
