Sacred Hearts Academy hosted its annual canned food drive at the end of November. Students were asked to bring in cans of non-perishable items, including boxes of canned meats, fruits or vegetables.
Student Council president, Angela Wong, said “The purpose of the canned food drive was to unite the school together to give to those less fortunate. The canned food drive is an annual tradition that the school participates in and we wanted to continue the tradition, but add a new twist as well.”
Food collected was distributed to St. George’s parish in Waimanalo and families in communities across the island.
SFA Chair, Erica Freitas, said, “We set our goal at 1,200 canned goods to set a realistic number for the student body to strive for and as an incentive Student Council promised a surprise in the event we reached our goal.
The student council placed a large shopping cart at the front of the school with the daily count of cans collected that day, hoping to raise awareness and promote student involvement.
Vice-president, Caroline Kikkawa, said, “To encourage participation, the Student Council promised a special treat if we were able to reach our goal. We reached almost double that amount, so the treat is coming soon!”
The school collected a total of 2,389 cans during the drive.
