Facebook is an online social media site that allows family and friends to connect over the Internet. It became the leader of social media sites since its inception, attracting over one billion users. The popularity of Facebook, however, has decreased among teens. Instead, teenagers have shifted their interest to other social networking sites.
Instagram is a photo-sharing application that currently has millions of users.
Senior Lauren Arakawa said, “Instagram is more personalized to suit the individual, seeing what people experience on a day-to-day basis.”
Although Twitter, a blogging service, limits users to 140 characters per update, many teens use it like a daily blog or a personal diary.
Senior Caroline Kikkawa said, “I’m always on Twitter, constantly writing about my thoughts and opinions. It also allows me to follow my favorite celebrities and read about what they’re doing as well.”
Tumblr, a photo-blogging site, allows users to post multimedia on a personal blog.
Senior Jaclynne Stern said, “Tumblr has become a daily activity for me, especially since there’s a limitless amount of photos to view and reblog.”
Facebook appears somewhat outdated as newer, innovative ideas for social media emerge. Although it offers the ability to update instantly, Facebook is often disregarded and users prefer the more specialized versions of update like Twitter or Instagram.
Though Facebook’s social media dominance is slowly diminishing, its stock remains strong. The fate of the site’s popularity is currently uncertain, but time will reveal which social media networks remain in public favor.
