The National Honor Society (NHS) is taking the lead in the school’s tutoring program. Dean of Faculty Mary Girard held training sessions for eligible tutors to teach basic techniques for helping other students.
Club adviser, Dr. Kira Krend, said, “The program meets student need for one-on-one peer assistance. Additionally, it provides tutors with practical tutoring experience while they give back to the school.”
The tutoring center is open for students in the library every day at lunch and after school.
Junior High adviser Joyce Hall said, “The tutoring sessions provide much academic support for students in need. Having peers as tutors instead of teachers offers a different style of teaching and allows the students to form bonds.”
NHS members contribute a minimum of one to two hours a week to help other Academy students. Some members are assigned to specific students while others report to the tutoring center for students seeking additional help.
Senior Courtney Malina said, “Tutoring not only benefits the student I’m helping but gives me useful credentials for the future.”
