Good grades is being emphasized this year for all students participating in sports.
The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) has a policy requiring a GPA of 2.0 and no failing grades. A failure to meet these requirements results in the athlete’s inability to participate for two to four weeks until an improvement is made or grades are updated. Ineligibility will continue if the student fails to bring up her grades.
Academy students are being reminded that they are students before athletes.
College Counselor, Randall Fong, said, “Balancing school and sports helps students manage their time. Even in college, there are academic requirements that athletes must meet in order to be eligible.”
This year study hall is required for all athletes on all practice days and runs from the end of the school day until the start of practice.
Study hall supervisor, Aimee Paa, said, “After school study hall is a space where students are encouraged to do their homework instead of wasting time on their own. Though they are not forced to study, it is highly encouraged that the time is used wisely and students be productive.”
Players have grown accustomed to the study hall, taking advantage of the quiet space and school environment, which allows them to complete some work before going home.
Senior Bo Taylor Samson said, “I don’t really mind spending my time studying after school since I have the option to do homework or get help from available tutors.”
