The 18th Annual Sacred Hearts Academy Scholarship Gala took place on Oct. 18 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Alumnae who were honored include Suzanne Dods Chong Kee, Rita Gora, Elizabeth Ho, Momi Kaanoi and Karen Dick-Kung.
The gala served as a formal fundraiser for the scholarship fund. One-third of the student body receives financial aid, and the gala contributed to these scholarships.
Development Director, Andrea Hamilton, said, “The purpose of the gala was to raise scholarship funds for Sacred Hearts. These funds are awarded to Academy students in the form of scholarships and financial aid that is used toward their tuition while a student here. The proceeds from the Gala directly benefit students. The money is given to students in the form of scholarships and financial aid. Each year, about 1/3 of all students receive financial aid.”
A silent auction was held throughout the night with a new feature of mobile bidding. Attendees bid electronically through their smartphone or iPads and received an alert every time another bid was made. There was also a brand new live auction that contributed to the fund.
Freshman Tiani Quon said, “I thought it was a great experience because I was able to work on my social skills and it was great to see how many people are determined to help fund scholarships and financial aid.”
“Going to the Gala showed me how much the alumnae are willing to help students and how they are doing something important for the community and for the school,” said freshman Marissa Okamoto.
“The Scholarship fund is very important to student families as well as to the school. Sacred Hearts’ mission is to provide a quality education to anyone who desires an Academy education. If finances are an issue for a family, the family can complete a financial aid form and submit it for financial aid. More and more families are needing some form of assistance in order for the student to remain at Sacred Hearts. Each year, the number of requests increases. It is very important for Sacred Hearts to continue to find ways to assist families with financial assistance,” said Hamilton.
