Autumn marks the start of flu season, a time where disease spreads rapidly and often. Prevention is key and the flu shot offers one protection against influenza viruses.
Vaccines are updated every year to adapt to new strains of flu viruses. A shot and a nasal spray are available: the shot contains a dead strain of the virus while the spray has a live, weakened version. Both options are beneficial preventative measures against viruses.
The Academy has scheduled a state-funded flu clinic for students from kindergarten to eighth grade on Nov. 5.
In addition to the flu vaccine, other practices can help people to avoid getting sick.
- wash hands frequently
- cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
- stay at home if not feeling well
- avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth
- avoid close contact with others who are sick
